The Night Watchman by Louise Erdich

🦉The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
🦉This book was very different from any other book I have read. It gives you a glimpse into the fight the Native Americans had against the Government. The Native Americans on the Turtle Mountain Reservation in rural North Dakota work endlessly, help each other, try their best to be educated, and are still living off the government’s meager assistance and many are freezing and starving. When a new bill is in the process of getting passed that will emancipate all Native American’s and give them “freedom” to be relocated (taken from their land), tribal council member Thomas takes the fight all the way to the state Capitol.
🦉Although fiction, this is based on the author’s grandfather Patrick Gourneau, who lead this fight.
🦉What I loved:
– the characters, especially Thomas who was very generous and worked 2 jobs while also trying to protect Native American’s rights.
-This book showcases how unfair it was that we took over Native American’s land and pushed them to an unuasable, tiny area and expected them to thrive. And after that, we tried to take that little land away as well.
-The insight to how quickly the poor/inexperienced can be taken advantage of by society’s scum.
-Native American rituals and talking to spirits was very interesting.
-Based on true events.
🦉The only negative was this book was a little too long, but I highly recommend it!
